There is a lot of technical talk about exercise equipment and when you buy from us in an informed way then you will enjoy the experience so much more.
If you are confused by the technical talk then don’t worry, so was I at first. Here is the easy explanation
Flywheel
The heavier the smoother the action. Best to get a flywheel of 18kg or heavier. Even home bikes such as the Bremshey Control Spinning Bike and the Exploit Spinning Bike come with heavy flywheels.

Braking System
The choices are magnetic and friction braking.
Friction braking is similar to the braking used on commercial spinning bikes at the gyms. You have total control over the actual pressure applied.
Friction pads do wear with time
Magnetic braking works with a magnet that is either closer or farther away from the flywheel.
Magnetic systems do not wear out but you have less control over the increments of the resistance.
Drive system on Spinning Bikes
This is the part of the exercise bike which connects the pedals to the flywheel
The two most common systems are the belt drive and the chain drive system.
Belt drive is regarded as a superior system for a couple of reasons
- In a home gym environment it is easier to adjust
- Belt drives are quieter
- Minimal maintenance is needed
- Belts don’t fly off and they don’t need messy oil
Adjustments
Spinning bikes and exercise bikes should at least have an adjustable saddle and handlebars
Better bikes like the Proteus spinning bike will have more adjustments such as the vertical displacement of the handlebars and adjustable feet.
Pedals
Cleats and normal pedals are available. Unless you are a very serious cyclist then you may not be too concerned about needing cleats.
In any event cleats are available from cycle shops and can easily fit onto a spinning bike. Make your decision on the quality and value of the overall bike and not on small items such as whether the pedals have cleats.
Some other frequently asked questions
What results can I expect from using a spinning bikes compared to other gym equipment such a treadmills, elliptical trainers and rowers?
Generally you will burn fewer calories on a spinning bike unless you crank up the intensity by resistance or speed. Unlike a stepper, and treadmill you don’t carry your weight with a bike, (the saddle does that)
The top calorie burning piece of fitness equipment must be the WaterRower rowing machine, followed closely by the stepper.
Commercial Spinning Bike versus Home Spinning bikes?
Price will be a consideration. In addition commercial quality gym equipment tends to be built to withstand a commercial environment over extended periods of time. You get what you pay fr.
What’s the difference between an exercise bike and a spinning bike?
- The spinning bike will have a small or in most cases, no console or programs.
- The exercise bike will have a nice comfy seat and a may appear to lee intense.
- The spinning bike is generally all metal and the exercise bike will have lots of plastic bits.
